PeaceJam Juniors (grades 1-5) may be used as a stand-alone curricular unit, or may complement existing curricula or programs such as character education, conflict resolution, service-learning, citizenship and multicultural education. It may also be offered in homeschool networks, or as an after-school program in community- or faith-based children's programs.
The curriculum addresses educational content standards in reading and writing, history, math, science, geography, and visual arts at the same time as it addresses character education and conflict resolution skills.
Each module focuses on the childhood story of one of the PeaceJam Nobel Laureates. Young eyes are opened to what it was like to grow up in countries like Northern Ireland, South Africa, Tibet, Burma, Guatemala, Argentina, Iran and East Timor.
Integrated into each module is a character trait and a conflict resolution skill embodied by the Laureate that they are learning about.
Service-learning plays a key role in this program, with teachers and youth workers encouraged to work with the children to identify an issue they would like to address, create and implement a plan that balances community service with learning.
