Service-learning creates community-school partnerships that breathe new life into education and increase academic achievement through safe and civil learning environments in and out of school. It is a way of teaching and learning that engages students in active learning and experimentation. PeaceJam programs use this civic engagement as a vehicle to help youth increase both their academic achievement and their community commitment.

Service-learning is designed to help youth:

        ... Become active citizens and leaders in their community;

... Learn to apply skills and knowledge to issues in the community;

... Learn job skills and career ideas; and

... See themselves as important and valued members of the community.

Service-learning has youth develop partnerships with their local community to address unmet needs. Youth learn how to take on leadership roles as they:

        ... Investigate the issues that exist in their community;

... Brainstorm possible solutions to problems and issues;

... Develop collaborative relationship with agencies, school, and/or local
             government; and

... Learn new knowledge and skills and how they apply to real world issues

PeaceJam service projects use the Global Call to Action issued by the PeaceJam Nobel Laureates to the youth of the world as their starting point.
